DWTS Finals Competition Night!!!!

I hope that ABC never springs for a better trophy than that glue-gunned-looking chintz pile they hand out to the Dancing With the Stars victors. American Idol promises everything but Godhood to its just-add-water pop divas, who can already sing when they walk in the door. DWTS, meanwhile, draws in a diverse cast of people with little-to-no dance experience, quietly fans out some cash money incentive to get them to sign the dotted line, and then makes its public reward so inexcusably tacky that even they can’t fake awe for the thing. They refer to it as “America’s Most Famous Mirror Ball”, which is arguably true, but actually does more to tweak reality show hyperbole than enable it. It ends up helping write the show’s theme – that the people who win are the ones who genuinely desire and push themselves to be the best for its own sake.

And we see so many past competitors littering the audience, returning to contribute to comedy bits, or to poke their heads into rehearsals – it can’t all be the diminishing ducats or added seconds of camera time; there is just something about this showcase that permanently fuses to their DNA. Who cares if it’s all flim-flam; a giant sequined hullaballoo with corny jokes and spray tans? That’s Entertainment. The people who put this all together seem to GENUINELY love it, and that love is what we experience.
